Become a designer at the intersection of technology and play
The Minor in Game Design and Development complements knowledge acquired by students in their majors with a technical multidisciplinary understanding of game design and programming concepts. Students gain a fundamental awareness of core building blocks of games, theories of game design, principles of computer graphics and three-dimensional modeling and best practices for design and programming of game-oriented experiences using game and physics engines.

In the game design minor, you’ll learn the fundamental programming and design skills that make computer games possible. You’ll explore the psychology of play: why people play games and what makes them fun. You’ll use the resources of the Shenandoah Center for Immersive Learning (SCiL) to work with cutting-edge VR technologies and development tools. By the time you finish this minor, you’ll have made several portfolio-quality games, both on your own and in a team, and you’ll be well-positioned to start a career in game design.

Internship Possibilities
As a game design minor, you’ll have access to the Shenandoah Center for Immersive Learning (SCiL), a state-of-the-art immersive technology lab located on the SU campus. SCiL boasts more than 40 cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) systems, 360-degree videography equipment, powerful computer workstations, a motion capture studio, an audio production studio, graphic design workstations, haptic technologies, and an electronics maker space, all available for student use. SCiL works on various design research projects throughout the year, including game design projects, with students in our various related majors playing an integral role. SCiL is also a host site for game jam and other game-related events throughout the year.
